How to Read Sofa Construction

A showroom salesperson who actually knows the product will talk about the frame, the springs and the foam before the fabric. Here's what those terms mean and why they're the difference between a sofa that lasts two years and one that lasts twenty.

Two sofas can look nearly identical on a showroom floor — same silhouette, same fabric family, similar price — and behave completely differently five years in. The difference is almost never visible from the outside. It's in the frame, the springs, and the foam, and all three are things you can ask about directly, in specific terms, before you buy.

Frame material and joinery

Start with what the frame is actually made of. Kiln-dried hardwood is the standard for well-built furniture — kiln drying brings the wood's moisture content down to roughly 6 to 8 percent, which matters because wood that isn't properly dried will continue to warp, shrink and crack as it acclimates to your home's humidity over its first year, loosening every joint attached to it. Softwood, like pine, is lighter and cheaper but flexes more under regular use. Engineered wood — plywood specifically — can be a perfectly reasonable frame material in the right application; particleboard or OSB in a structural frame role is a real warning sign of a short-lived piece.

Joinery is the detail most showroom shoppers never ask about, and it's the one worth asking about most. Corner blocks — triangular wood or plywood blocks glued and screwed into every frame corner — should be standard on any well-made frame; their absence is a bad sign on its own. Doweled joints, using wood pegs, are stronger than a glued butt joint alone. Mortise-and-tenon joinery — where a protruding tenon on one piece fits into a cut mortise slot on the other, then is glued — is the strongest traditional joint and shows up mostly on higher-end frames, since it's more labor-intensive to produce. Listen for the phrase "glued, screwed and doweled" — that combination, on every joint, is what separates a frame meant to last from one that isn't. Staples holding fabric or webbing in place are completely normal; staples as the primary structural joint holding the frame corners together is not.

Suspension systems

What's under the seat cushion, holding it up, matters as much as the frame itself. Sinuous wire springs — sometimes called "no-sag" springs — are S-shaped wires that run front to back and clip to the frame rails; they're the mid-market standard, offer decent comfort, and can eventually develop a squeak or a bit of sag after seven to ten years of regular use. Eight-way hand-tied coil springs are the traditional, more labor-intensive alternative: individual coil springs, each tied to its neighbors with twine in eight directions, distributing weight more evenly and holding their give longer. They show up mostly on higher-end and more traditional frames because of how much hand labor they require. Webbing suspension — jute or elastic strips woven across the frame, with the cushion resting directly on top — is common on lower-cost or more casual, low-profile sofas; elastic webbing has some bounce to it, while plain jute webbing alone, without any springs, tends to feel firmer and more basic underfoot.

Cushion fill and foam density

Cushion fill runs on a real spectrum, and none of the options is objectively "better" — they trade off firmness, maintenance and price. All-foam cushions are the firmest, hold their shape longest, and need the least upkeep. Foam wrapped in down or fiber softens the surface feel while keeping a foam core's support underneath — a common middle-tier choice. All-down cushions are the softest and most luxurious-feeling but need regular fluffing and lose their loft fastest without it.

Foam itself is rated by density, measured in pounds per cubic foot. Higher-density foam — roughly 1.8 to 2.5 lb — holds its shape for seven to ten years or more of regular use. Lower-density foam, around 1.2 to 1.5 lb, is noticeably cheaper to produce and can start visibly softening within two to three years. High-resiliency (HR) foam is a more expensive grade that recovers its shape faster after you stand up and generally lasts longer than standard polyurethane foam of the same density. A store that can quote a density number, not just "high quality foam," has actually looked at its own spec sheet.

Fabric and leather durability

Upholstery fabric durability has a real number behind it: the Wyzenbeek double-rub count. A fabric is mounted in a testing rig and rubbed back and forth under controlled pressure until it shows visible wear. 15,000 double rubs is a reasonable floor for daily residential use; 30,000 and above is commercial-grade, built for much heavier traffic than a living room typically sees. Fabric rated under 10,000 double rubs is generally meant for lower-use, more decorative applications — an accent chair, not a family sofa. The Martindale test, used more often on European fabric, measures a similar idea in rub cycles rather than double rubs, with roughly 20,000 to 30,000 comparable to heavy domestic use.

Leather doesn't use a rub count — it's graded by type instead. Full-grain leather uses the top layer of the hide with its natural texture intact and is the most durable option available. Top-grain leather has the surface sanded and often embossed for a more uniform look, and is still genuinely durable. Bonded or "faux" leather is leather fiber or vinyl bonded to a fabric backing; it looks convincing when new but the surface layer commonly peels or cracks within two to five years of regular use.

A five-minute showroom test

  • Sit down and shift your weight side to side — listen for a spring squeak and feel for frame flex.
  • Lift the front edge of the sofa slightly. An unexpectedly light frame often signals lower-density wood or a thinner engineered-wood build.
  • Check whether the cushions are zippered and removable — a sign the maker expects them to be washed, re-fluffed or eventually replaced, rather than a sealed, disposable unit.
  • Ask directly: what's the frame made of, what's the suspension system, and what's the foam density? A store that answers all three without checking a tag has actually been trained on the product.
